Chemistry journal features two Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø articles and photo
Two articles and the cover photograph published in the Journal of Chemical Education’s October edition originated from Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s chemistry department.

The October, 2012 edition of the Journal of Chemical Education highlights the work of Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s Mund-Lagowski Department of Chemistry by publishing two articles from Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø faculty and students as well as a photograph snapped by a professor.
Dr. Dean Campbell, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, was the lead author on both articles and supplied the cover photograph for the edition. The photograph, taken by Dr. Campbell, features a layer of soot floating on water and supporting a drop of water on its top surface to illustrate the very water-repellent, or superhydrophobic, nature of this material.
One article, written with researchers from the University of Texas at Austin, examines carbon soot, a cheap, easily produced material that humans have known and used for thousands of years, and its various applications and demonstrations in the field of chemistry and nanotechnology.
The second article, written with Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø chemistry lab coordinator Tamara Fitzjarrald and then-undergraduate student Richard Villarreal ‘12, describes a laboratory experiment that introduces aspects of materials chemistry to students as they make a take-home polydimethylsiloxane window cling containing gold or silver nanoparticles.
