The Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Nursing Program is working to inspire the next generation of health care professionals through Girls Light Our Way (GLOW).

GLOW is a Peoria-based organization that aims to empower students from local middle and high schools with educational tools and opportunities designed to direct their lives upward and help them become contributing, engaged members of their communities.

Dr. Sokonie Reed and her Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø colleagues recently welcomed GLOW to campus to provide a close look at the nursing profession. Dr. Reed provided four informational sessions to the GLOW students: Nursing 101; Functions of a Nurse; Caring as the Essence of Nursing; and Vital Signs.

During the Vital Signs session, the students toured the Nursing spaces on campus, including Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s new high-fidelity multi-patient nursing simulation lab, which allows students to engage in medically immersive, life-like simulated medical scenarios.

“It’s always a pleasure engaging with students in the Peoria community, especially students of color,” said Dr. Reed. “I recognize the importance of seeing people who look like us in spaces we aspire to occupy. Nursing is a stable profession with many opportunities that can help move individuals and their families out of poverty. It’s my hope to limit self-doubt and boost the confidence of students who may consider nursing as a career path.”

Reed says she hopes participants left the event with a deeper understanding of the nursing profession and the critical role nurses play in health care.
