Cybersecurity Student Guide

The purpose of the is to aid cybersecurity students in their academic, career, and personal endeavors. The site is currently maintained by Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø faculty and students. We welcome suggestions and corrections.

Career Services

In addition to reviewing the resources shared in the Cybersecurity Student Guide, the Center for Cybersecurity encourages Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø students to leverage the resources offered by the Smith Career Center.

Student Organizations

Cybersecurity Club

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø provides students with a dedicated student organization focused solely on cybersecurity. Participants learn how to use command terminals to practice penetration testing via red and blue teaming (offensive and defensive hacking) and develop real world cybersecurity skills for all levels, beginner to expert. Club members have quickly demonstrated their skill on a global stage. In November 2022, Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø was ranked seventh in the world on Hack The Box.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Information Technology Students (BITS)

After the national Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) organization was acquired by CompTIA, leadership of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø student chapter decided to rebrand their organization as . This organization caters to students in all technology-related majors, but has recently placed a higher emphasis on analytics and cybersecurity.

AI Club

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø is open to any students who want to stay up-to-date with rapidly evolving AI technologies. Participants will learn about different LLMs, like ChatGPT, and how to use them effectively and responsively. Throughout the semester, the organization hosts events on campus, where students have an opportunity to connect with industry experts, like-minded individuals, and grow their network.

Competitions

Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Vishing Competition

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Vishing Competition is an immersive cybersecurity event that challenges participants to apply research, communication, and critical-thinking skills in a live, ethically controlled environment. Designed to simulate real-world social engineering scenarios through vishing, the competition provides a unique opportunity for students to experience how human factors influence cybersecurity while operating under strict guidelines that prioritize professionalism, legality, and respect.

CPTC simulates a real penetration testing engagement. Teams scope, test, and report on a themed environment, and are judged on technical depth, professionalism, and communication.

NCAE Cyber Games is a cyber security competition for college students who have never participated in a competition or hackathon before. Cyber competitions are a great way to build your skills and learn about the industry, but they can be intimidating if you’ve never tried one before. This program aims to make it easy (and fun) for students to see how competitions work and learn with others who are also new.

The mission of the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition is to give students a controlled, competitive environment in which to defend a live business network against an active adversary — balancing security against operational demands, and testing the technical skill, teamwork, and judgment that professional cyber defense requires.

The NCL, powered by Cyber Skyline, enables students to prepare and test themselves against practical cybersecurity challenges that they will likely face in the workforce, such as identifying hackers from forensic data, pentesting and auditing vulnerable websites, recovering from ransomware attacks, and much more! Open to U.S. high school and college students, the NCL is a community and virtual training ground that allows students to develop and demonstrate their technical cybersecurity skills, helping students bridge the gap from curriculum to career!
